Making a mess of the place

100_3412.JPG
Yes, that foot is off the floor. The little climber was rocking herself on the edge of the basket so that she could do a better job of getting all the toys out onto the floor.

Oh day full of play

100_3408.JPG
I know that the day will come when I spend much of my time reminding these two to clean their rooms. But in these early days, I find great satisfaction on those days that the girls play with all of their toys. It is the satisfaction of a day well-played. After all, play is a baby's proper work.

Redneck dinner

100_3380.JPG

It hit an extremely unpleasant 90 here in Chicago (that's 32 for metric-reading folks). I decided that dinner would be more pleasant with no shirts or pants---but bibs and diapers were required (if babies had formals, it would be black or white bib). I would post the picture of me, but that would scare too many of you....

Maeta is getting physical

Over the last two weeks, Maeta has gone from a sedentary lifestyle to an extremely active one. Her capabilities change each day and it is really fun for us. Today, Maeta followed Zofie into the bathroom. When she got there I inquired, "Maeta, what are you doing?" She turned and gave me the biggest grin. She is so proud of herself and her ability to crawl, stand up, and climb.

It turns out too that she is very strong. Zofie has been doing the same things for weeks, but she never moves furniture the way Maeta does. Chairs in the kitchen get dragged around; the toy basket gets lifted---in short, the makings of a disaster.

Just so that she is not short-changed. My strapping daughter Zofie nearly did a chin-up on Maeta's dinner tray earlier today. She managed to get a grip and then lifted herself off the ground to get a look at what Maeta was doing.

Sneaking up on the girls

100_3371.JPG
The lighting is terrible here. If Maeta sees us with a camera, she poses. If Zofie sees us, she crawls over. The only hope to catch them at play is to sneak up. Unfortunately, the quality of the photo suffers in our haste. If you look closely at Maeta's waist, you can see how her leg and Zofie's arm work when they are entwined like this. I think we have some ultra sound shots where we could see legs and arms from the sisters intertwined like this.

Another dinner shot

The only time they sit still long enough for a photograph is when they are eating. Hence the sheer volume of eating shots.

Picture a day . . . almost

We were looking through some of the photos on the site a few nights ago; talking about how much the girls have changed and yet how much their personalities come out in these various pictures. To that end, I want to offer a few notes:
  1. We never intended this site to drive our picture-taking. I think I have about 100 total photos from my life prior to the arrival of the ladies---and about 2000 in the 10 months since. Digital photography has given me a freedom with 'film' that I never felt when I had to pay big dollars for photo processing.
  2. Chris and Helen kept a "Picture-a-day" diary while in Russia. I never thought I could keep up, but looking at this site, I realize that we have 274 posts (or 88.67% of the days). Not "A" material yet, but a very solid "B" for the effort.
  3. There are pictures of the girls faces that I would have missed were it not for the camera. In the recent batch, I love the one of Maeta that we titled "Creepy Crawly"---it has a face that, had we tried to capture, we would have missed. Instead, just by chance, we happened to catch her chattering away while she crawled.
  4. WOW those girls were small in August. If you have not looked back recently, you will be shocked. Maeta was so tiny. Amy and I have "glimpses" of memories from those first two hard months---we were so sleep deprived and generally of unsound mind that it is now all a blur. It's nice to have a photo record.
Those are my notes for tonight.

Amy and her girls in the Japanese Garden

100_3365.JPG
We went to the Japanese Garden in Jackson Park with the girls on a beautiful Spring day. We are sad to admit that in the nine years I have lived in Hyde Park (and more for Amy), we have never been to this garden which is just a mile or so away. We can (and will) claim that we wanted to enjoy it first with our babies.

Home From Work

100_3348.JPG
Pictures like this make me feel like a dad: sometimes the memory preserved in a picture is more important than the way you look.

Seriously, though, time comes and goes and someday these girls are probably going to try my patience with a full body tattoo or a weird piercing--and I will need to look back on these simpler times when they could not wait to see me when I arrived home from work.

A bird in the mouth is worth two in the bush

100_3340.JPG
As Erica notes, every picture of Zofie lately has her eating something.

Creepy Crawly

100_3333.JPG
Maeta is creeping and (unlike her sister) sometimes crawling. Zofie is, of course, much faster, but over the last week, Maeta has built up the physical strength and determination to pull herself around the apartment.
